If there’s one thing that Man of Steel taught us, its that giant, alien dubstep machines are deadly. Also, the world needs more Kevin Costner movies. Apparently, Kevin Costner agrees (about the movie part, his opinion on dubstep is unknown), as he’ll soon be going through a bit of career resurgence, first playing spy-vs-spy with Chris Pine in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and now also playing spy-vs-spy (the guy likes spying, I guess) with Amber Heard in 3 Days to Kill, the first trailer for which has just been released.
In this heart pounding action-thriller, Kevin Costner is a dangerous international spy, who is determined to give up his high stakes life to finally build a closer relationship with his estranged wife and daughter, whom he’s previously kept at arm’s length to keep out of danger. But first, he must complete one last mission – even if it means juggling the two toughest assignments yet: hunting down the world’s most ruthless terrorist and looking after his teenage daughter for the first time in ten years, while his wife is out of town.
That looks like it has some potential for a mindless action romp. What the trailer and synopsis barely mentions though, is that the drug Costner’s character is given to keep him alive apparently creates all kinds of hallucinogenic shenanigans, creating some funny moments. As experimental drugs in giant black syringes tend to do.
Vowel hating director McG (Charlie’s Angels, This Means War) is at the helm, with Luc Besson co-scripting, so you know the type of slickly made, non-challenging fare you’re in for here. So if you want to see Kevin Costner take a page out of the Liam Neeson Book of Old Man Badassery (while also getting the lovely Amber Heard thrown in as a bonus), this looks like just the thing.
3 Days to Kill also stars Hailee Steinfeld and Connie Nielsen, and will be shooting up cinemas on February 21, 2014.
